It’s getting to that time of actually moving it all over to GRACE. The web guys are planning to make a few more edits early this week, then update the posts to add content put on OncTalk over the last few weeks, and then have new content go over to GRACE, which you’ll notice is divided into different subjects, both in division of the posts and in the fourm questions. Lung cancer is a big one, but now Leah and potentially other contributors will have a separate social work/coping with cancer section, complementary medicine will have posts in that separate section, questions about the various cancer treatments and supportive care is on its own section, etc. One key reason that sections on symptom management and side-effects of treatments are a distinct section rather than part of the lung cancer section is that pain control or side effects of tarceva or chemo or whatever are generally the same for a lung cancer patient as well as a colon cancer patient. Eventually I may have experts in other types of cancer join in on a separate subject section for colon cancer, prostate cancer, etc., and this way it’s possible for everyone to share access to tips on managing side effects or cancer symptoms.

In anticipation of the move to the new site, I wanted to give people a chance to navigate the new forums and leave some questions/comments, just testing the waters before we freeze the OncTalk forum section and leave it for browsing but no new threads or comments on existing threads. Importantly, the old forums will be searchable from the GRACE site, which will return results of content on both the GRACE site and the OncTalk forum pages.

Your current log-in should work. Once in, it should now be much easier to edit your profile, add an avatar, and now send private e-mail to other users. We can change the structure and certainly fix bugs (and I’m sure there will be some bugs) — just let us know. The forum page is here. Feel free to navigate around the rest of the site, but know that there are still a few small edits we’re making (including updating the supporter list, so for those of you who have donated in the last month, know that the page will be updated to recognize you within the next 48 hours).

So look around, please feel free and quite encouraged to leave questions and comments there. For the next few days at least, I’ll plan to check and answer questions at both the OncTalk and GRACE forums. But know that in a short time we’re moving exclusively to GRACE, so the OncTalk threads will be readable but frozen.

Thanks, and post at the GRACE or OncTalk forums, or e-mail me at west@cancergrace.org if you have questions, comments, or bugs to report.

When I switched over to the new forum, it showed me as a “guest” and not logged in. I gave the login a couple of tries, but it doesn’t seem to be working (for me, at least). I had it send me a new password, but the email hasn’t arrived after several minutes, so I’m guessing that something isn’t quite right. Apart from that, the new forum looks great. I was able to read NED’s recent post about Tarceva nails, okay.

Hi, the log in didn’t work for me either (wouldn’t accept my password). Looks good though!

My log in did not work until I went to the home page and entered it there. It then accepted my password and allowed the log on.

The new forum looks good. One little thing that I noticed — on the forum index page, the link to the “old forums” across the top doesn’t work. It links to onctalkt.com. That extra “t” on the end is the problem.

Works fine from the Home page.

    Dr. West,
I gave the new forum a try just now. It seemed to work well except for one thing. When I clicked on the “preview” button, the preview part of the screen was only about 1 line tall. It did have a scroll bar on the right side, but it was just a short thing and I couldn’t grab it to move up or down - so all I could see was the first line of my post. It might be a browser related issue (I’m running Safari on a Mac).
The other thing that might be useful as a section in the forum would be a folder for asking questions about how the forum works, or to report glitches, etc… I didn’t see anything like that there (which is why I’m reporting this here!).

    Dr. West,

I tried to make a donation and consistently got an error message saying I had not filled in required information fields after I had filled in the form and clicked to continue. I could not do it from the onctalk site either. No button displayed. Hopefully just a temporary hiccup…I will try again tomorrow.

    Dear all,

THANKS FOR THESE COMMENTS. I’m sure we can fix this, but this is why we didn’t want to move everyone before people unearthed problems we hadn’t seen. I’ll talk with the tech guys ASAP tomorrow.

Myrtle, I’m very sorry to have to make you or anyone work so hard to contribute. I just tested the site and was able to do a donation, but it’s pretty tempramental. I had to enter a second credit card number after it wouldn’t take my first, for no good reason (to my knowledge, my credit is still good). I also think it’s EXTREMELY easy to miss a field. You need to start by specifying an amount at the top, which I missed initially, then there are about a dozen blocks to fill, including the security code on the back of the card, which you enter after the expiration month and year. If you didn’t miss any fields, or if you’re not getting that button, perhaps it’s a browser-specific problem. I’ll try to contact you via e-mail to troubleshoot.
(or mailing a contribution also works as a last resort).

Thanks for your patience, everyone. We’ll tackle the issues with logging in, e-mailing of information (I believe I’ve encountered this as well and presumed it was fixed, apparently incorrectly), and also the preview feature.
