Tomorrow morning I’ll be heading to San Francisco for the 13th World Conference on    Lung Cancer, the largest meeting in the world dedicated to lung cancer.  It’s run through the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer, which has been growing and becoming more visible over the past several year, and happens every couple of years, rotating around the world from Asia to North America to Europe and back.  (The last one was in Korea, so this is just a tad more convenient for me).

Though much of the work presented at the ASCO meeting in late May will be presented again, there will also be new content and a lot more time and attention paid to new research in lung cancer, as well as a focus on advocacy and other pressing issues in lung cancer.  And importantly, the Young Fun Lung Club, an informal group of many of the (relatively) younger leaders in the field of lung cancer, are going to get together for dinner tomorrow night to keep our group very friendly, which only makes it easier to collaborate in the future.

As with this past year’s ASCO, I’ll be sending Twitter updates about new content (”Tweeting from the meeting”) as well as general observations over the next few days that will be posted here on the dedicated page for this “microblog” content, and people who are signed up on Twitter for my updates (@DrWestGRACE) will get those updates sent to them automatically.

I’ll plan to check in and respond to questions when I can, but if there are delays, it’s only because we’re trying to make the most of the time when so many lung cancer experts from around the world will all be together.

    Dr. West -

Have a great time in San Francisco. I look forward to all the information you glean at the conference. This sounds like a very special and specific (to lung cancer) event. Bring a sweater. San Francisco’s weather has been cool compared with Seattle’s.

If you get a chance, try the ice cream at Humphry Slocombe in the Mission. I missed it on my last visit and am wishing I didn’t! Secret breakfast? Olive oil - you can convince yourself both are healthy. Have a safe trip.

I love San Francisco and am happy to have meetings that bring me here 2-4 times per year. I had envisioned this being a more relaxed meeting with some down time. That’s not exactly how it turned out, but it’s been great — there have been conference-related activities keeping us pretty busy, and then all of our waking hours (and some that should be spent sleeping) are spending time talking with other leaders in the field. Fortunately, the lung cancer world is a very friendly, social, non-competitive environment, and most of the people who focus on thoracic oncology really enjoy collaborating and spending time together when we can.
