Hi.....I had a ct scan that showed a small mass in my left lung. As a result my thoracic surgeon ordered a lung biopsy. I see him in a few days about the results. In the meantime, he has ordered a second biopsy for tissue and bone. Can anyone shed light on why this 2nd biopsy is requested. I see him next week. Thank you.

Hi jj341,
Hi jj341,
Welcome to GRACE. I'm sorry that the scan finding is causing you concern and resulting in these procedures; we certainly hope that this is something other than cancer.
The main reason to order a second biopsy would be to see if what shows up on the scan outside the lung is the same process as what was seen in the lung. For example, if the small lung mass is found to be cancerous but the bone lesion is not, then you may be looking at an early stage, curable cancer, while if the pathology from both sites shows the same lung cancer, then the cancer has spread and, though treatable, would not be curable.
I hope you get very encouraging results.
