A belated update on my dad - 1256048

My dad passed away last May, 22 months after being diagnosed with SCLC-ED. I could not write about him for a long time because I have missed him so much, but I felt I had left something unfinished by not coming back here to thank you. The physicians, patients and caregivers that devote themselves to sharing information and words of wisdom on Cancergrace perform an invaluable service. You made our cancer experience more bearable and taught us things that we have passed on to others. My dad's quality of life was quite good for nearly all but the last 3 months (and really it wasn't the cancer at the end but other lung problems--perhaps exacerbated by the cancer and/or the treatment). We were able to spend a lot of time together and share hopes and memories, and we were grateful for that. My dad left my brother and I an autobiography that he had started back in 2005, long before his cancer diagnosis. We weren't allowed to read it until he had died. I only wish that he had had the time to write more, but I can hear his voice in his words.

Thank you again and stay strong.

Duchess,

I'm so sorry to hear of your dad's passing, but thank you for taking the time to update us. I'm glad that you had some good time with him and that you can still feel his presence in your memories and the words of his autobiography. As our late GRACE friend Simon54 once said, "I believe people change one another through love" and I believe that your dad's love for you has changed you forever, and that the person you are now is a lasting legacy of that love.

Peace and comfort,

I am very sorry to hear of your father's passing, but I'm glad he left you with his story and that you were able to share so much in his last few months.

Fortunately or unfortunately, many people here can relate to your loss and share your grief. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.
