Hi gang! I apologize for nor visiting as much as before. I always check in when I get a notification on Email but still not as active as before. I'm pretty sure I told you all about my Son Chris who was diagnosed with Toungue Cancer in April. Long story short he had surgery, had two treatments of Chemo and 37 treatments of Radiation. Well the treatment seemed to be rougher on him than they at Cleveland Clinic antisapated. And he passed from Complications on the 17th of July. Any way I don't like taking a lot of different meds while on Xalkori. But with all the stress and anxiety with my son I went on Celexa and when he passed she added Ativan. It didn't seem to help so I weaned myself off of it. I just have one question what do most of you use when you can't sleep? Right now I'm using Benedryl because of a allergic reaction to a bath gel. Plus I started Prednizone and the Benedryl so it's better but I'm still without sleep. I would appreciate any answer!
And while I'm on here I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Lorrie

Hi Lorrie,
Hi Lorrie,
It's good to hear from you. I don't have any personal experience to make a recommendation, but I would note that prednisone can cause sleeplessness, so you may want to talk to your doctor about a substitution.
I believe Dr. West previously provided this link on dealing with insomnia, but here it is again as a reminder: http://cancergrace.org/cancer-treatments/2010/02/09/getting-your-z%E2%8… As Dr. Harman stated in that post: "Steroids are notorious for causing insomnia—up to 50-70% of patients taking prednisone complain of this."
Good luck getting more sleep; going without it makes everything worse.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!

Thanks Jim, I have read that
Thanks Jim, I have read that article and they mostly recommend natural methods! I know the Prednisone causes some sleeplessness I took it for my CT today. Won't take after today. As it turned out I was up all night. Will come home after and take a nap I guess! Thanks for your input. I think the dose they give you when your sick is greatly reduced. So if my rash gets worse I'll call my Dr. For a prescription? Lorrie!

Good to hear from you, and
Good to hear from you, and let me say again how sorry I am about your son's passing.
I think it's appropriate to check in with the doctor if your rash gets worse. And yes, prednisone is definitely a common cause of sleeplessness (benadryl can help with that as well as rashes). But as the link notes, there are many potential options that may help.
There are also some physicians who focus on sleep as their specialization if this problem is bad enough.
Good luck.

I just wanted to say HI
I just wanted to say HI Lorrie. I know this won't be such a joyous Christmas but I hope you get through it with a few carefree moments and lots of hugs. I hope you find some good sleep as well. I don't know how you feel about prescription anti-anxiety and sleep aids but they can do the trick if monitored closely. Have you spoken with your doctor or a psychiatrist?
All best,
Janine

Okay everyone, I was to see
Okay everyone, I was to see my ONC and as per usual we got to talking and I forgot to ask her about something for sleep. So the scheduler went back and got my prescriptions for me. She gave me Tremazepam 15 mg.1 capsule at bedtime. My question is before I get it filled is this one that doesn't go with Xalkori? I thought I read somewhere this is one that doesn't go? If it's not I'll call and have her call something else in? Thanks everyone!

Lorie, I dug this up from a
Lorie, I dug this up from a past discussion which was about anxiety but the drug was discussed is in the same class of drugs as tremazepam, benzodiazepines. Dr. Weiss had this to say, "There are multiple ways to treat anxiety. Perhaps the most effective and safest is counseling from a skilled and compassionate cancer psychiatrist or cancer counselor. When medications are used, they’re typically from a class called benzodiazepines, with ativan most frequently used in the cancer world." http://cancergrace.org/lung/topic/updating-each-other-in-a-common-threa…
I'll ask Dr. Walko, our oncology pharmacologist to comment as well.
I keep you close and hope you get some rest.

Lorie, I am assuming that you
Lorie, I am assuming that you are talking about temazepam. There is a slight risk of drug interaction that could increase the exposure of both agents slightly, but with the low 15 mg dose of temazepam, likely is not of major concern, especially if you only take the drug on occasion.
Best wishes,
Dr. Walko

Thank You again everyone! And
Thank You again everyone! And Thank You Dr. Walko! I really don't like taking any sleep aid on a reg. basis! So I will definitely tred lightly! Maybe even a half pill! I have issues with falling a sleep so if I do half and it works then I'll be happy! Merry Christmas to you all and A Happy Healthy New Year! Lorrie!

One more thing I should have
One more thing I should have said Dr. walko is I am already on Celexa and an occasional Percocet. Would this be a factor? My prescription for Celexa is two a day @ 10mg but I only am taking 1 a day. Percocet I take about 1/2 to 1 pill a day. Sometimes none! Just wondered is there something that would be better? I plan on trying to get off the Celexa after the Holidays. Right now I have already taken myself off the Ativan I was taking right after my Son passed this past July. Haven't taken any since End of October. Lorrie

Thanks Janie but I'm off the
Thanks Janie but I'm off the Ativan was only on it for a couple months after my Son passed! This grief thing is my problem and I know i shouldn't have the regrets or guilt but I am working thru it! Maybe conceling would be helpful but I just hate having to go out of the house in this cold winter weather. Both my husband and I are going to start going to a gym after the first of the year so hopefully that will do the trick! Thanks for your efforts and your support it means a great deal to me! I feel like family here on Grace! Marry Christmas my dear! Lorrie

Lorrie, I have respect for
Lorrie, I have respect for people finding the best way to grieve and I'm so glad to hear you and your husband are taking next steps together. Your struggles make mine look small and they sure as hell don't feel small. I want you to know that what I say to you is always with the utmost respect and just hope that something along the way is helpful.
I pointed to that link because it was the only one I found with a doctor's comment on interactions between xalkori and benzodiazepine (Dr. Weiss' comment). Both ativan and temazepam belong in the benzodiazepine class. but I didn't mean to make a connection with you, just your most recent question.

Lorrie, Neither should be a
Lorrie, Neither should be a big problem. The Celexa may also compete to a small degree with the crizotinib but given the low dose you are taking, it is likely not going to be a problem.
I know the holidays can always be tough after a loss, so keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
