Increasing physical activity for stage 4nsclc - 1270078

I can find almost nothing written or discussed about increasing physical activity for stage 4 nsclc. I am 51 and very active and keep pushing myself on the tennis ct (5.0) and in the gym. I get winded more quickly than I would like and am wondering whether the Tarceva/avastin combo therapy I'm on(since feb 2015) is keeping me from catching my breath or whether it is the cancer. Also taking xgeva for some rib fractures that no longer hurt at all. I would love to hear of others out there who are able to exercise vigorously while taking similar drugs. I want to push myself but be wise.-Bill

Hi Bill,

It's really good to hear you're working out regularly. There's no reason not to push yourself if that's what you want to do. It's a matter of preference. The drugs certainly can cause the fatigue and windedness and usually do.
My thought is slower and more easy makes for a longer trip.

I hope others have input.

Let us know how things go and Best of luck!

I'm interested in this topic as well. I worked out and ran regularly before the diagnosis. Since the diagnosis, I've been trying to stay active with walks, but avoiding anything strenuous. But I don't really have good evidence or anecdotes to support that this is better. Would like to know what other successful survivors have been doing.

By the way bill, do you mind me asking where you are being seen for the Tarceva/Avastin combination?

Thanks!

I am being treated at MUSC Charleston, SC. I keep pushing it and have lowered my pulse back down to around 56 and am slowing gaining strength and endurance but the hot weather really saps me. The tarceva keeps me from sweating as much as I used too and I have to be careful playing tennis in the 92 degree heat. I even hiked a mountain last weekend. Who knows if pushing it is helping but if I can compete and feel strong then it helps me mentally forget the big C(until I start coughing again). I would suggest you try running a short distance in the cooler part of the day and see if you can slowly return to your pre-diagnosis form. I am not a doctor though........good luck
