Squamous Cell Lung Cancer Stage 3b, is surgery is it still an option? - 1273943

My Wife age 49 was diagnosed a couple weeks ago with stage 3a or 3b squamous cell lung cancer, she underwent a biopsy yesterday on her right clavicle lymph node, Her Oncologist told us that if its negative then she will do surgery and if its positive she will go right into Chemo/Rad . My question is if the lymph lode is positive does that take surgery completely off the table? or is surgery still possible if she has a positive reaction to the Chemo/Rad treatment? also is this a good time to get a second opinion or should we wait? Thanks

Hi stevea,

Stage IIIa/IIIb is one of the most difficult stages of lung cancer to determine the proper treatment, as you can see from this post by Dr. West. With that in mind, I think this is probably a very good time to seek a second opinion, preferably at a major teaching hospital affiliated with a medical school.
