SCLC PARATRACHEAL NODE AND HILAR NODE ENLARGEMENT ON PET SCAN - 1274726

My recent PET scan showed enlargement of both paratracheal and hilar nodes in my right lung. Last Dec. I had my lower right lobe removed. Onc. ordered biopsy of hilar node. At the hospital Radiologist Dr. called Onc. and said they usually biopsied paratracheal node rather than hilar node. Onc. agreed so that was what was biopsied. Biopsy came back as no abnormal cell activity in paratracheal node. I don't see the onc. until July 29 and wonder what should happen now. Will they now have to biopsy the hilar node?

Hi Sherry,

Welcome to GRACE. I'm sorry that your PET scan showed enlargement in these nodes. It's possible that your oncologist will want to biopsy the hilar node, since swollen nodes in the context of an existing lung cancer diagnosis raise suspicions. But since lymph nodes can become enlarged for a variety of reasons, such as infection, the decision to biopsy may depend on other factors such as blood work or any other indication of a co-existing illness, or the level of uptake from the PET scan.
