Pain Receptors in Lung - 1289590

Hi,
Is it true that the lung has little or no pain receptors? If so, why would someone with a small central tumor have symptoms of pain in the chest when breathing? Could it be psychological?

Thank You

Gill

Hi Gill,

Yes, the lung doesn't have pain receptors, but tumors can cause inflammation which can spread to the pleura (the liquid-filled sac around the lungs) or the chest wall, or there can be an increase in that pleural fluid. Any of these conditions can cause pain when breathing. Although a psychological cause can't be ruled out, the other possibilties are more likely.

Thank you for taking the time to respond Jim. This now makes sense to me.
