Hi
Next February it will be three years since my vats surgery for squamous cell cancer lllobe removed t2nomo
Moderately differentiated,no adjuvant treatment required.
I have had three ct scans in that time ,I donot get to see the scans just get letters a couple of weeks later saying all clear ,however the last one reads as follows "nothing to suggest metastatic disease ,there is however
An area of soft tissue which is plaque like.over pulmonary artery and ascending aorta.it is 11mm in thickness and similar to previous study but was not present back in 2015pre surgery, this is therefore likely to be post surgical change but is not showing signs of progression.
My last scan before this was done 9months ago and nothing was mentioned they wanted to see me in a year ,they did scan earlier at my request re,worry that I had(back pain all ok on that), the consultant said scar tissue and nothing to worry about ,but of course the minuite I left hospital I had questions going around in my head ,I suppose the ones I need answered most are 'is this common 'could it turn nasty ' could it affect heart ' .
Sorry for long post and thankyou for your time

Hi Sandra,

I'm sorry that this latest scan report is causing you such concern. Interpretation of such reports is problematic without seeing the scan and having access to the remainder of a patient's medical records. As such it's a bit beyond what we can do here.

That being said, I will point out that radiologists tend to report everything that could be anything, out of an abundance of caution. In addition, two radiologists looking at the same scan will provide somewhat different reports. The fact that the report states that there is nothing to indicate metastatic disease, and that what is described has not changed since the previous scan, makes the interpretation of this as scar tissue quite reasonable, as cancer tends to grow over time. If the radiologist had any suspicion that this might be cancer, that would likely appear in the report.

I encourage you to seek further clarification from your own medical team.

Thankyou so much Jim your answer was very comforting and reassuring,to be honest I think I was worrying
And overthinking things ,because I normally just receive a letter saying all clear,
but this time they sent report in detail,I have spoken with a lung cancer nurse and she said much the same as you .so again thankyou and thankyou cancergrace xx
Best wishes sandra

Plaque in this case is called atherosclerosis. You should see your primary and bring the report or a copy of the report on a CD. They note my atherosclerosis on every scan. Should have your cholesterol tested as you might need help with the atherosclerosis. Just my opinion as a LC survivor as well, we can still and do have other health issues that can arise. Take care, Judy

Yes, I'd follow up with your primary to make sure the meds are still working. I take only the statin but I also don't have a stent. Take care, Judy
