Hello and welcome to Grace. …
Hello and welcome to Grace. I'm sorry you need to look for this info. Stage IV rectal cancer survival rate depends on whether cancer is contained regionally or has spread to organs outside the area such as lung or brain. If it is contained regionally it may be curable. Talk to your oncology team about this. Much depends on your individual case. If you're not comfortable with your oncologist a 2nd opinion may be in order. Most specialists at large academic centers provide video/phone consultations.
From cancer.org, "Keep in mind that survival rates are estimates and are often based on previous outcomes of large numbers of people who had a specific cancer, but they can’t predict what will happen in any particular person’s case. These statistics can be confusing and may lead you to have more questions. Your doctor is familiar with your situation, ask how these numbers may apply to you." This page also has more info on how these numbers are calculated.
You can find accurate and up to date info about rectal cancer here on Clevland Clinics site.
I hope this helps and best of luck,
Janine
I joined GRACE as a caregiver for my husband who had a Pancoast tumor, NSCLC stage III in 2009. He had curative chemo/rads then it was believed he had a recurrence in the spine/oligometastasis that was radiated. He's 10 years out from treatment.
