Bondronat Vs. Zometa and Xgeva - 1247725

Today my husband's tooth was extracted. It was a tough procedure as the failed root canal had also gone deep inside, but finally extracted with one stitch put into place. Praying that everything goes well. As Dr. West had said not extracting also does not mean protection from ONJ.

Our onc prescribed 50 mg tabs of Bondronate tabs in place of Zometa IV. I wondered why we did not discuss Bndronate more on these sites rather than Zometa or Xgeva.

Is Bondronate not used in your practice? The onc says this will not cause ONJ, but I googled it and found that it also causes ON as it is a Bisphosphonate.

Just looking for more information. Thank you.

Any of the bisphosphonates can cause ONJ. It's a fine drug, but it's not as well studied or commonly used in this setting of bone metastases as either Zometa (zoledronate) or denosumab (XGEVA).

Thank you Dr. West.,

Yes, it would be surprising if there was a Bisphosphonate that did not cause ONJ and it was not being prescribed.

I hope there are other people who have suffered tooth extractions and still not got ONJ.

As the first signs of ONJ are gum and jaw pain, what are the steps taken to treat these immediately?

Thanks Dr. West,

I just hope the jaw was not affected in any way. Yes, we are thinking of stopping the Bisphosphonates for sometime if not completely. We are due for the radio pharmaceutical samarium on 27th Sept. perhaps with this infusion he can do without the Bisphosphonate for sometime.

Yam,

I hope you got your answer from Dr. West. Are you also on Bisphosphonates?

No. My husband is on xgeva. Every time after the shot, he has SOB and cough for a few days. So far, this is the only side effects we've seen.

Yan, Xgeva is also a Bisphosphonate. Happy that you have minimal side effects.
My husband did I not have any side effects on Zometa, but because of the Dental work, he went off it.

Hope your hubby is doing well. All the best
