Stage IV Mucinous Adenocarcinoma pancreatic cancer treatment - 1255834

My 31 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Mucinous Adenocarcinoma pancreatic cancer. What is the most effective regimen of treatment for this cell type cancer with a pancreatic primary? Is there anyone who has undergone treatments for this cell and type cancer???

Dr. Milind Javle, a medical oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center with a particular expertise in pancreatic cancer, was kind enough to offer his insights here:

[i]Mucinous adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is usually accompanied by cyst (fluid filled area in the pancreas) and has been described in young women. The prognosis is usually better than the usual pancreatic cancer. There is another rare kind of mucinous pancreatic cancer that has no cyst and lastly pancreatic cancer that has scant but positive mucin. The latter two cancers seem to behave more like the usual pancreatic cancer.

Given your daughter is so young, we must also think of any genetic link (STK11 mutation or PJ syndrome has been linked to cystic tumors). There are now laboratories that offer targeted DNA sequencing of the tumor, I would definitely consider this for her as may open clinical trial avenues for her. At this time, we dont really know of any treatment differences, so we treat these pancreatic cancers similarly.
