i had a section of my second rib removed in sept. and after 11 weeks of study it was determinded i have a rare bone cancer witch needs large resection inclucing the 1st and 3rd rib the right side of my breast bone and there fore detaching my clavicle.
As a fisherman this will have a major impact on my life and all my research on reconstruction have left me confussed and scared.my local Thoracic surgeon is great but has never done this before i am looking for recommendations on where to go for this.

Welcome to Grace. I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer and the effects it will have on your life. We don't have specific information on bone cancer. My husband a cabinet maker had lung cancer and his type of tumor grew into his chest wall destroying 3 ribs and encroaching into his brachial plexus. We happened to live in the same town as one of the leading thoracic surgeons of the "pancoast" tumor, Dr. Robort Cerfolio. He is now in NY. I would suggest contacting someone like him who deals with the type of surgery that involves removing and replacing parts of the chest wall and shoulder girdle. There may be other more suitable surgeons but his group will be familiar with who that might be.
Let me edit this to say, you absolutely want someone who does this type of surgery not someone who has not.

Marty, where are you located? Janine has given you good advice on the type of surgeon you should look for. As you said, this is your livelihood and you want the best of the best.

meet surgeon yesterday he is going to give me rounds of chemo for now and monitor me with freqent bones scans. He was very concerned that with all the removal i may never continue with my way of life and this is so rare he can't find anyone with any info on it.
o i'm from Nova scotia and it was a low grade ostio sarcoma with the only cancer cells being in the bone marrow

Thanks for checking back in. That sounds like a plan you can fish with :) I hope the chemo kicks some sarcoma cell butt. With a low grade cancer you may be able to take chemo off and on and have a real chance of keeping the cancer at bay without being very destructive or disrupting your work. Since chemo does attack cells in the digestive system it can cause nausea. The best way to keep that at bay is to stay ahead of the situation. Depending on the type of chemo steroids are often given at the time of infusion along with either aloxi or emend. Then there are pill that you can take if there is nausea several days after chemo. Stay ahead of the nausea (take precaution before feeling sick). You'll know what that is after the first or so infusions. If you have trouble with appetite you may find new foods that are more appealing than once was or nutrition supplement drinks like ensure plus.
