Many of us in the cancer world have come across Cancer Treatment Center of America's ("CTCA") touted statistics and even may have wondered if their treatments offer an advantage over everyone else's treatments (I know I did for a nano-second when my Mom's disease started to progress rapidly). Here's an article from today's news that offers a perspective and an alleged explanation for the statistics from this "for-profit" treatment center: http://vitals.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/06/17211582-very-red-flag-over-…

If what is claimed in this article is true, I find it to be very very very cruel and very very very sad on all different levels. . .

I believe this article came out a week ago, when I saw and tweeted about it (I know that my tweets reach only a very small subgroup of the GRACE audience). I found it very important, since I and many other cancer experts find the CTCA claims to be far-fetched, though their marketing is brilliant -- and extremely effective.

I personally don't want to write pieces here highlighting my concerns about CTCA and try to only reply when directly asked. Interestingly, they have recently hired some credible people in cancer, so I think they are trying to earn (or at least buy) more credibility.

I will concede that they are extremely patient/customer-oriented, which certainly fills a void compared with how much of allopathic medicine is delivered. However, my perception has long been that the style of cancer care there often strays far from the best evidence, and rarely if ever in the direction of a treatment option that is less profitable than the best established standards of care.

Good cancer care should be humane and "motherly." It should be as convenient as possible. It should offer all hope that is honest. Equally importantly, it must use drugs that work and should be focused on the patient, not on profit.
