Are there data on survival rates for stage 1A BAC greater than 5 years? I can find plenty of statistics for survival rates up to 5 year, but no data after 5 years. I have been cancer-free for 5 years, but the Mayo Clinic recently found a 3mm nodule on the same lung. I am scheduled for another scan in 3 months to determine if the nodule increased in size. Thank you.

Hi peterc,
Hi peterc,
Welcome to GRACE. I can't put my finger on specific statistics beyond 5 years, and that's not unexpected, as patients who reach that milestone don't tend to be followed past that point. The exception would be for those patients who continue to be treated for BAC (as discussed in this post by Dr. West), but that data is not relevant to your situation, having been NED for 5 years. Of more interest is the fact that the risk of recurrence of a cancer after five years is quite minimal, and it's actually a bit more likely to develop a new cancer. On the other hand, small, benign nodules are very common even in patients without a cancer diagnosis; they're just found more often in cancer patients because they're being scanned on a regular basis.
I hope that your follow-up scan shows no growth, and that this nodule proves not to represent cancer.
