Plavix after brain met Tx - 1272840

Almost 18 months ago I had SRS to single bi-lobed brain lesion. A few months later I went to my cardiologist with recurrence of prior stent treated PAD pain and increased inability to walk. I'd had iliac stents placed a few months prior to cancer Dx but had to be taken off Plavix and aspirin because of brain met danger of bleeding. One stent is reblocked. So last year cardio said would not re-stent because I couldnt be on blood thinners and it would just close up again.

Fast forward, my brain scan two weeks ago shows no brain lesion, simply scar tissue, decreased area of concern, no new tumors, and minimal edema associated with scarring. I asked radiologist if he would feel comfortable with me getting new stent and going on Plavix. He said absolutely and he and my hematology Onc talked to cardio. Although cardio is not completely comfortable he agrees it's a QOL issue and I'll have surgery on the 12th. I feel if the guys who know my brain better than anyone are ok with it, then it's fine. But would love to know if anyone with treated brain mets have safely taken blood thinners. TIA.

Hi candyceg, I'm so sorry your in this position. Blood thinners are often a topic of discussion here mostly because lung cancers often cause blood clots. So yes there are times when they are used that otherwise might be thought to be a bad idea. If your radiation oncologist is comfortable with it and believes the brain mets are no longer as much of an issue and he's consulted your other doctors then it's your final decision. QOL is of the utmost importance I think you'd agree. It sounds like you're doing a job finding out what your can about. Knowing your risks and balancing the possible effects are important when making these decisions.

In cases like yours it's difficult to know what the best answer is. As long as you've got a team (that includes you) working together I think you can feel comfortable with your decisions. You impress me.

I hope things go well and you're feeling better soon,
Janine
