Do my mum need WBR for her leptomeningeal carcinomatosis - 1254167

My mum had been diagnosised leptomeningeal carcinomatosis which was spreaded from lung tumour (NSCLC) in December 2012. She declined very fast. Luckily the doctor told me that she has EGFR mutation in her tumour. She started using irressa on 25th Dec. She climbed up from semi-conscious and started gaining strength. It seems that Irressa is controlling the progress of her illness.

My question is if she should have a whole brain radiotherapy while Irressa is still controlling the process? Will the whole brain radiotherapy help her and also I don’t want she will be over-treated.

Thank you very much if you can help.

Kind regards

Hello Fred, I've read often of how tarceva and iressa can help some people with lepto and EGFR positive but seldom do we have first hand information from the family. That's great to hear your mum is doing better. From what I understand other therapies aren't effective.
I will contact a doctor to give input on your question.

One question for the doctors. Would moving from iressa to tarceva if iressa stops working be an option worth trying if possible?

I hope she does well for a long time,
Janine

Thanks certain spring. If I'd seen that first I'd have trashed this one.

fred, we will respond to all the new threads so it isn't necessary to post in different forums.

I'll wait for the response from our faculty then merge them together maybe will edit one of the original ] posts so they're not repeating.
