Lung cancer and exercise - 1258570

Dear Dr. West:

I have read the posts about cancer cell and oxygen and have a question: shall cancer patients doing regular exercise? Will exercise help the tumours grown by providing more oxygen to the body?

I asked this because I have been doing a Chinese Qigong (supposed to be an anti-cancer one and was designed by a cancer patient. There are hundreds of thousands of Chinese cancer patients doing it now) since being diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in July 2012, and I have been feeling quite well. But after reading all the posts on cancer cell and oxygen posted in 2012 I begin to worry whether the strong breath I have been practising in this Qigong will help my tumours' growth by providing more oxygen to them.

I am not sure if this is a silly question, but I would be very grateful for your advice indeed.

Best wishes,

Tracey

Hi Tracey, So good to hear you're doing Qigong. There is no significant data showing exercise is harmful for people with cancer. As a matter of fact you're doing some advanced lung exercises I would imagine in your practice so are probably ahead of the game.

No, no evidence at all to suggest any detrimental effect from doing exercise. Cancer cells use the same oxygen and sugar that all of the other cells of the body use, so you can't differentially affect the cancer cells. Exercise is great for you.

I found this link where Dr. Pennell speaks on the subject of exercise, cancer, and research, http://cancergrace.org/lung/2009/03/26/np-exercise-for-lc/

I do yoga and some of what I know about yoga, and Qigong seems to be a similar affair, is excellent in oxygenating your blood meaning the lungs don't have to work as hard at their job. I think you've put yourself ahead of where you'd be without this training. Great work, I think you'll be able to continue with your practice to some extent all along your journey.

Hi Tracey,

Hope all has been good with you. I apologize If this may not be the right way to reach you, I am new to Cancergrace and still trying to find a way to private message you. I noticed you may be in Hong Kong. I am in Hongkong and mum's oncologist is also Hk based. If you are comfortable, I would like to speak with you and share local knowledge. If so, please let me know if you are willing to and maybe there is a way to private message you my contact details?

Best,
Sb
