I went through larynx cancer back in 2006. Surgery was scheduled but the treatment route was changed to radiation and chemo. The surgery never materialized, the tumor on my right vocal cord went away. Jump to 2010 and I developed COPD. This past october 2013 after several bouts of a bad URI ( upper respiratory infection ) and a new lung doctor a CT scan showed a 4 cm tumor in my upper left lung. A PEP confirmed it was cancer. My new lung doc is suggesting surgery instead of waiting to do a biopsy then decide what route from their. My lungs are in bad shape with the COPD. I have an appointment set up with the surgeon next tuesday. Is jumping right to surgery with a bad lung candidate something that is so called common?
Thanks,
Walter

Regardless of your lung doc's referral pattern, meeting with the surgeon isn't the same thing as going directly to surgery. Surgeons usually play a significant role in head/neck cancer management, and it would be appropriate to get an opinion, including timing of a biopsy vs. surgery.
Good luck. I hope you'll let us know how things proceed.
