multiple lung nodules - 1288475

In 2011, a chest CT revealed approximately 13 lung nodules with 2-3 being ground glass. None of the nodules are > 5 mm. They were stable till a new nodule was found in 2014 but it has remained stable. However, I just had an annual 2016 scan and there are 2 new nodules, both 4 mm. One is actually following a linear track of 3 other nodules in the right upper lobe and appear to be filled with "mucus" per the pulmonologist. The other is in the RLL. Is it possible to have new nodules continually developing that represent a benign process? I was a 30 yr former smoker but quit 5 years ago.

Hi gigizabuk,

It's possible, but even if it isn't, as has been stated in your previous threads, the entire process is so slow that the risk of over-treatment is high. The fact that a previously biopsied nodule was benign also tends to suggest the others are not cancer. Only a biopsy can answer the question, but even that could be inconclusive, so continuing to monitor the nodules on a regular basis is a very reasonable choice.
