Hi Keelyhollie,

I’m so sorry this is happening.  Cancer is such a horrible horrible disease. We don’t have expert info on cervical cancer so I can’t speak to specifics.  However, if your mom’s cancer has traveled to the abdomen including stomach she would be considered stage IV for treatment purposes.  At this stage treatment is given for, to extend life and/or to improve quality of life. If a procedure doesn’t fit into one of these 2 categories then you would want to know why it is being considered.

Knowing what is best for your mom can only be determined by her, her caregivers, and oncology team.  There may be good reason to move to hospice care such as her present physical condition. If she is frail or weak, anti-cancer treatment to extend life may do more harm than good.  This type of determination can only be made by those who know her complete picture. Her input is also important to help determine how much risk she is willing to take.

Getting a 2nd opinion from a large teaching/research hospital may be an option if she wants to explore further options.

The information below is from cancer.gov

Stage IVB Cervical Cancer

Treatment of stage IVB cervical cancer may include the following:

Use our clinical trial search to find NCI-supported cancer clinical trials that are accepting patients. You can search for trials based on the type of cancer, the age of the patient, and where the trials are being done. General information about clinical trials is also available.

I hope you and your mom find the answers you need.

All the best,

I joined GRACE as a caregiver for my husband who had a Pancoast tumor, NSCLC stage III in 2009. He had curative chemo/rads then it was believed he had a recurrence in the spine/oligometastasis that was radiated. He's 10 years out from treatment.
