Hi, was wondering if Dr. West could give us some advise on trying to find a clinical trail for this kind of cancer near MI. He was diagnosed with stage 4 Sarcomatiod Carcinoma of the lung which is also in his spine, both lung lymphnods, tailbone and femur. I'm grasping at straws right now as the oncologist has told us this type of rare cancer is resistant to chemo. He is to start radiation on monday to help with the pain in his back. Other than the pain in his back, he shows no signs of stage 4 cancer to the normal person. He is very healthy. We need to try and find some type of way to fight this!! I am researching the pd1 and pdl1 immunotheraphy but our radiation oncologist doesn't seem to know anything about it. Any suggestions?

hi sherryb, there are two members here who have sarcomatoid carcinoma doing well on pd 1 pdl1 trials (of which there are several). following is a link to a blog post on 2nd opinions and how they are a very good way to find trials in your area if your onc isn't able to provide that help. http://cancergrace.org/cancer-101/2011/11/13/an-insider%E2%80%99s-guide…
this recent post has a discussion on this very topic with both the members i mentioned above. http://cancergrace.org/topic/sarcomatoid-carcinoma
i hope this helps,
janine

I don't have anything more to add. An immunotherapy trial such as one against PD-1 or PD-L1 would be a leading consideration here, with more success stories for sarcomatoid carcinoma than any other treatment of which I'm aware. Your medical oncologist would be a better person to direct you to a clinical trial than most radiation oncologists, but otherwise, it would probably be most helpful to seek a second opinion from a larger, potentially academic center with a lung cancer specialist. They certainly have very knowledgeable people at Wayne State in Detroit, and there are also good people at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor -- there may well be other centers and trial sites at other locations in MI as well.
