Just received the 1st of 5 scheduled SBRT/ radiation treatments to the lung, left upper lobe nodule. The radiation is "aimed" at the left breast, amongst other places, since the nodule lies directly beneath the left breast. The radiation also is aimed through other areas on the side, armpit, etc, multiple sites/points of entry. I am concerned that after just the 1st treatment, I am experiencing pain in the left breast, the pain began @ 24 hours after treatment. Have 4 more treatments to go. They never mentioned the possibility of this happening, wonder what is going on, and if radiation should be postponed? Is this common, to have pain to other tissues that are in the "path" of radiation? They have me on a 2x per week schedule for this radiation therapy. Asking for additional opinions. Thank you.

Addendum: no burn marks at this time, this is not a burning type of pain, it is a general pain in the entire left breast, and even feels like the underlying muscle is painful. Thank you.

This is something you should
This is something you should talk to your radiation oncologist about. You can call them anytime to let them know about your pain. It isn't a usual sensation to expect but there may be extenuation circumstances. Call it in.

Probably the pectoral muscle. I had 5 SBRT to URL and it seemed like it went through the breast but it was the pectoral muscle. Radiation has to go in and come back out even if it's targeted. I now have scarring in the pectoral muscle and the armpit area. Keep moving but not overdoing it to keep the scar tissue loosened up. I learned that one too late but it's gotten better over time. Mine was 5 years ago.

Janine, after 2nd SBRT to lateral left upper lobe of lung (2.8 cm nodule) the area is still painful and aching, breast area and side/arpit area. I found it surprising that when I went in to see my radiation oncologist he said he did not know of a reason why I am experiencing any pain from the radiation. He said I might want to take ibuprofin for relief.
If one of our GRACE radiation oncologists could offer any ideas of some possible causes it would be helpful to better understand why this pain has occurred 24 hours after 1st treatment and is continuing 3 days later, at present. Just want to understand what is happening. { I was not informed of my treatment plan, other than I would have 5 treatments.} I appreciate the earlier forum response to this topic from cards7up. Thank you.
