Hi Grace,
I just wanted to check something out for one of our group. He is 53 and in mid 2014 was investigated for a rise in blood pressure, gastric reflux, pressure in chest and general malaise. All through 2015 he had a number of investigations including colonoscopy and biopsy from stomach. The extensive tests did not give a diagnosis. In March 2016 he had a chest CT which did not reveal any cause for the on-going symptoms. In December 2017 he had an emergency visit to hospital due to onset of weakness and some confusion. A blood test showed low sodium. A CXR showed enlarged lymph nodes and subsequently he was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. We are trying to understand if the small cell lung cancer was the cause of all the issues since 2014 but the CT in March 2016 goes against this. Or could small cell actually have started in 2016 and grown at such a rate to be picked up on xray in late 2016? This question has come up in our support group in the past but I don't think we have had anyone with such well documented previous investigations that were negative.
We have found it very helpful and supportive to discus our individual journeys and it also helps when we can make sense of them. Thank you for providing this resource, we have found it very useful.

Hi frey,
Hi frey,
Although it's always impossible to completely rule out a particular scenario, since cancer seems capable of doing just about anything, it would be extremely unlikely for SCLC to produce so many symptoms, over such a long period of time, without appearing on a scan and showing a rapid rate of growth over time.
