Mutation Testing - 1268771

My Dad tested positive for EGFR June 2013 and had been doing well on Tarceva, until progression early this year. He started Afantinib, with no CAT scan to test efficacy until later this month. The oncologist mention getting a second opinion. He is currently at a University hospital. What is the difference in mutation tested when provided by a company like Life Technologies?

Thank you, Greta

Hi Greta,

I'm sorry to hear of your Dad's progression. If you use a company such as Life Technologies, you may get a report on a wider range of mutations, although there is always the question of whether there is a drug available which targets that mutation.

For patients who have progressed after a good response to Tarceva, it is typical to test for a T790M mutation, which is targeted by third-generation EGFR TKIs now in clinical trials.
