Hi all
In October 2012, after flying to and from Burma, it was discovered that I had developed pulmonary blood clots. Luckily they were discovered the day I returned, and I have been on clexane ever since.
Next week I am off again, this time flying to Germany via Singapore and Dubai, and return.
Am I at risk of developing clots again, or will the clexane prevent this? And, is there any extra precautions I should be taking?
Thanks
Gail

I don't know of data to address this. The anti-coagulant should significantly reduce that risk, but that isn't to say that there is no risk. We routinely recommend that people get up and walk around every couple of hours during a long flight to reduce the risk, and that has no side effects. Drinking plenty of fluids is a good recommendation as well, at least to reduce jet lag, and it would be reasonable to just ask your doctor about whether adding an aspirin would be a good idea or not. To my knowledge, there are no studies to answer that question.
Enjoy your travels!

Thanks for taking the time to respond Dr West. Ok, lots of plane walking and water is on the menu!

Gail,
I imagine you're wearing compression socks, but have you tried the really thick, flesh-colored ones (usually have no toe/heel)? (maybe some light exercise on a vacant lie-flat seat?)

Jazz - love the advice. If I am going to wear compression stockings they at least need to be a fashion statement!

Hi Gail. A physical therapist visited me in the hospital to take me walking and for assessment. He said that if you're in a sitting position, you can put your legs out straight, then move your feet up and down, up and down, and that helps as well.
I am green over your opportunities to travel!!! So wonderful you get to live such a stimulating lifestyle. I couldn't be happier for you.

Yes, the compression stockings are also a great idea with no side effects (aside from those related to fashion).

Debra - thanks for taking the time responding to my post when you have so much shit happening. You are a wonder! I am thankful I have the opportunity and financial resources to do the travel I do. I figure I can't die whilst there is still a holiday booked! I am aware I am truly lucky.
Dr West - can you be my fashion advisor?
Gail

Hi Njiliu
Unfortunately we are only stopping in Singapore for an hour or so to change flights. I love Changi airport and can quite happily spend hours there!
Thank you for your kind off though and maybe another time
Gail

Thanks for the offer, Gail. As you know, I try to provide a frank assessment of any situation. I do passably for myself, but I don't think my sartorial style puts me in a range that would lead me to serve well as anyone's fashion advisor.
