Hi,

I have one question. A very good friend of mine has troubles with her mother who suffers from metastatic breast cancer. I told her how much you helped me and my mother, and I wonder if the same would be possible for her case.

So, if she posts a thread outlining the treatments her mother took (she's battling with cancer for 5 years), is it possible that she receives an answer telling her what would be the standard of care in US for a patient in a similar condition as her mother?

Also, what would be essential for her to write in the question? Eg, in the case of lung cancer I know that it would be critical to say if mutation testing has been performed and if EGFR, ROS or ALK have been found.

Thanks!

Hi costica,

As with lung cancer, after five years there may not be a clear cut "standard of care", but if your friend posts she will likely get a discussion of options.

If she reads Dr. Cianfrocca's Breast Cancer 101 post at http://cancergrace.org/breast-cancer/2011/09/06/breast-cancer-101/ she will see the types of information she should provide. As Dr. Cianfrocca stated:

"The best treatment for an individual patient depends on multiple things including:

The stage and type of the breast cancer
Certain characteristics of the breast cancer cells, including the presence of estrogen and progesterone receptors and whether or not HER2 is overexpressed.
Whether the woman has gone through menopause
The woman’s overall health including other medical conditions"

In addition, it would be helpful to know BRCA mutation status.
