SPN grew in 30 days - 1263007

I am a 44 yr old female never smoker. I recently was hospitalized for occlusive bilateral pulmonary emboli. On the ct scan it was also noted that I had a 2mm lung nodule in the right middle lobe. Due to the small size I was told at discharge to follow up with my pcp and get another ct scan in 30-60 days. In the meantime chest and right lung pain caused a trip to urgent care which led to another ct scan at the 28 day mark. This showed the nodule is now 1.6cm. This has prompted an appt with a pulmonoligist later this week. I tried to go to the growth table to get some insight but it would not pull up. Is the rate of growth I have experienced more indicative of infection, cancer or certain benign growths?

Hi apeterson,

That's awfully fast, and more likely to be infection. As Dr. West has said:

"nodules that grow incredibly quickly (VDT less than a week, for instance) are far more likely to be infection than cancer, and those that go for a year and a half or so without doubling are generally too slow-moving to be cancer." - http://cancergrace.org/lung/2007/11/12/lung-nodule-doubling-time/
