I am asking about a place to live where I can temporarily move with my parents who both have stage 4 cancer. We are in NJ and it is very stressful for me to work and get my dad into sloan kettering for surgeries and appointments and my mom is too exhausted to care for him as she has myeldysplastic syndrome stage 4. I would like to move with them to a home place where there is excellent nursing care and treatment and also end of life care should we need that. Mom can't fly so we would drive to this place. I was wondering about a hospital based program where they can have treatments and mom can have blood transfusions..dad has NSCLC adenocarcinoma and it was shrinking with the immunotherapy (the one designated to help melanoma patients) but he is in extreme pain from metastasis to bone and just had stints placed for swallowing. Mom is very stressed and the local oncology in our area is too busy to give them good care. They found Sloan Kettering also too busy with some nurses that weren't responsive (some were amazing).. (although Dad's GI DR was excellent). My parents don't have LT care insurance but we would pay out of pocket. Does such a place exist?

Hi wnderwo,

I haven't heard of such a hospital-based program other than perhaps an inpatient palliative care unit at a hospital with a cancer center, although I would think the self-pay cost might be prohibitive. Unless another GRACE member can post specific information, I would suggest you contact hospitals/cancer centers in the area in question to find out if they have such a unit. My wife's cancer center had such a unit, which was also the inpatient hospice facility. She was taking Tarceva at the time, but if she had needed further treatment such as chemo or radiation it would have been a simple matter to transfer her to the cancer center, which shared the same building. The staff at her unit was wonderful in every way.

Good luck finding what you need.
