Bone Biopsy - 1271106

Though I haven't received my PET results yet, my onc has scheduled my biopsy. It will be the bone biopsy from the spine. Can this actually be used for mutation testing? I'm concerned with the tumor having caused a compression fracture that the biopsy can cause more problems. Any info or advice greatly appreciated.

Hi Judy,

Although it is possible to use tissue from a bone met biopsy for mutation testing, Dr. West had this to say:

"It’s possible to biopsy bone lesions, but they are not preferred for genetic testing because of all of the processing required. Some labs do it, some don’t, and some clinical trials don’t allow tissue samples from bone biopsies. But it is possible to get genetic testing done from biopsies of bone metastases, though not as reliably as biopsies from soft tissues."

This page, co-sponsored by the American College of Radiology, describes the biopsy process and states that there is a small risk of fracturing the bone during the procedure: http://www.radiologyinfo.org/en/info.cfm?pg=bonebiopsy

Good luck, Judy. Our thoughts are with you.

My PET scan showed only the one area, YEAH! I'm a little nervous this time but I'll manage it I'm sure.
Thanks Jim & Janine!

Had my bone biopsy yesterday and it's negative for cancer. Pathologist was in room and said he's 99% sure it's not cancer related. They took several biopsies including a larger core biopsy, so pretty confident. The pain I'm experiencing is not from the compression fracture but most likely herniated disks and not just one! UGH! But so glad to hear, it's not cancer!

Hi Judy,

Not that herniated discs are a picnic, but that's terrific news about the biopsy! Now that your doctors know the source of the problem, I hope solutions can be found that will alleviate your pain.

Thanks for sharing your good news!

YAY Judy! I'm so happy to read that you've got herniated discs. OK, obviously that sounded wrong. I'm so happy they are quite sure this isn't cancer. I am sorry you've got herniated discs and hope you are able to mitigate the problem and be mobile and pain free. Lots and lots of hugs.
