I had a lobectomy 9/15/14 to remove the upper right lobe due 3.5CM tumor diagnosed as adenocarcinoma. I was borderline stage 1 and given the choice of chemo or not....I chose no chemo. Last Friday I had my 3rd follow-up CT Scan and today my oncologist called to tell me they found 3MM or 4MM ground glass opacities in my left lung but she felt that they were not worrisome and that we'll see how they look on my next CT scan in 6 months. Considering my history should I ask for a scan sooner than that? I did have the flu with severe chest congestion in December and a small cough that hasn't quite gone away since then. I want to trust my oncologist but felt the need to reach out and ask......how often does lung cancer come back? I haven't smoked for 12 1/2 years now but my father, mother and cousin all died from lung cancer so I'm a total monkey mind and trying to research this is no fun. I want to stay on top of this. Thanks for your time and opinion. :)

Welcome to GRACE. I'm sorry to hear of these scan findings which quite naturally are causing you so much concern. Although lung cancer certainly can and often does recur over the time period you describe, the appearance of ground glass opacities in combination with your recent (and apparently not yet fully resolved) illness tends to suggest that this is not a recurrence.
It''s reasonable to ask for a shorter interval before the next scan, and there is always the option of getting a second opinion, just to set your mind at ease. That second opinion would best be obtained at a major cancer center affiliated with an excellent medical school.

Thank you.....I feel better having asked and feel a bit reassured. When I know my cough is resolved and if the 2nd scan shows something then I'll reach out to the research center that I used for a second opinion before. It took 4 biopsies for my cancer to be diagnosed positive. I really appreciate having this avenue for research and discussion. The mind is pretty important in this journey. Thanks again! :)
