Hello,
I am curious to know whether breath testing for lung cancer has been approved or currently exists. I read Dr. West's article from 2008 regarding breath testing being developed, but has there been any progress in the 8 years since then? (Seems like a long time.) And also, has there been any progress in the field of breath analysis done by laboratory dogs?
CT and PET scans as the standard diagnostic and monitoring methods take their toll on the patient, especially when we have CT scans every 3 months and semi-annual PET scans as well. I will jump for joy the day that someone comes up with reliable alternatives to using these radiation scans for lung cancer diagnosis and monitoring!

As you can see from this page, this technology is currently being tested in clinical trials. At this point, if the test proves helpful, it would most likely be used in combination with CT scanning. As Dr. West has stated:
"I think that it could be very helpful in identifying which patients need CT screening or, along with CT screening, helping to identify which people have ambiguous nodules that are more or less likely to be cancer vs. benign findings." - http://cancergrace.org/forums/index.php?topic=10981.msg89539#msg89539
Although I agree that it would be great if the number of scans could be reduced, for confirmed lung cancer patients it seems that another new technology will be needed for the purpose of monitoring.
