Now that I am considered stage IV lung cancer and am taking Tarceva, does it make sense to ask my breast oncologist to stop the Tamoxifen? I was considered stage 1 breast cancer and have had clear mammograms to date.

Sherry,

This is a difficult question to answer. It depends somewhat on how advanced your lung cancer is. But generally if you have stage IV lung cancer, that is your life threatening disease and it is very unlikely that completing your adjuvant tamoxifen for a stage I breast cancer will make you live longer. Also tamoxifen does increase the risks of blood clots.

I wish you all the best,

I agree that it doesn't make a lot of sense to do things more because they are rituals than because they can realistically be expected to have an impact in the time frame we're looking at. That would be the case for tamoxifen as an adjuvant therapy for early stage lung cancer, or focusing needlessly on a modestly elevated cholesterol, etc.
