Hi Everyone,

Just want to give you an update on my latest scan and journey with BAC and micronodules..

The results are stable bilateral micronodules. A previously indentified micronodule in the right upper lobe is now shown to be a calcified granuloma.
The are two GGOs of note. Both show slow progression with no change from my last scan but an increase in size from the 6/21/2010 scan. They don't talk about size but from what I saw, each of these GGOs had a "squinty" amount of growth.
My onc at Mayo clinic said there is no need to treat right now and will scan again in 6 months. If the GGOs begin to consolidate, they would recommend stereotactic radiation as a possibility although she said that although they know it works on cancer, there is no real data on BAC and stereotactic radiation.

I would love to know if you have any data or information on stereotactic radiation and BAC.

Otherwise, I am feeling like a very, very, lucky lady since this cancer, although not going away, seems content to just sit there quietly. Is there ever a time when you can feel confident that your cancer will remain indolent?

Thanks so much for all you do.

Hi Lembird, Congratulations on another good scan. May your cancer remain indolent forever.
I will contact our radiation oncologist to get input on the stereotactic radiation and we'll make sure Dr. West will comment at least by his evening.
You're also a very strong and brave woman too to say how lucky your are.
Good Luck,
Janine

I would say that the longer you follow the cancer and see extremely slow change, the more confident you become that this will be the pattern it will show for many years to come. But there's no specific time line to that.

There really are no data on stereotactic radiation in multifocal BAC, and I'd have to say that it doesn't make any sense to me to pursue that approach in someone with a multifocal process in which the lesions are growing at roughly the same slow rate. That would just be treating a scan, and I don't think a person would necessarily do any better than if they used Adobe Photoshop to erase the nodules from the scan and pretended they weren't really there.

Hi,

In general, no need to consider stereotactic radiation when things are small and stable as you have described.

We don't have much in the way of data or clinical trials supporting stereotactic radiation for BAC. It is conceivable that it may benefit some patients in some circumstances, but it is a rare application of the technology.

Good luck with continued stable followup scans.
