I had a couple of questions about turmeric. I did a search first, but it seems that the most recent thread that's relevant to my questions is about 5 years old, so I thought I'd broach the question again.
My wife is a never-smoker who was diagnosed with stage-IV NSCLC / adenocarcenoma of the lung in September. She had 6 infusions of Carboplatin + Alimta, and is now getting Alimta maintenance. (Her main tumor is about 40% smaller now -- down from 6.4cm.)
Her regular oncologist at UCSF Mt. Zion gave her a referral to an "integrative oncologist" across the street. (He's so much in demand that the first opening he had wasn't until earlier this month -- almost 5 months after she got the referral!) This oncologist is an expert on all kinds of supportive treatments and regimens that help cancer patients, from diet to meditation to acupuncture. Having become familiar with my wife's case, he recommended a variety of things, including some specific medicinal mushrooms, and turmeric / curcumin.
However, we were surprised to learn that he was unaware that fresh turmeric was available; he presumed she would just take a supplement. Consequently, he could not recommend a specific amount of turmeric to add to her daily fresh vegetable juice (carrots, ginger, black pepper, cucumber, celery, etc.) I've been juicing a piece the size of a pinky finger, but don't know how that might compare to the effective amount in a supplement. Searching around on-line didn't result in anything useful.
Any never-smokers with NSCLC out there who use turmeric in any form (with the approval of their oncologist)? Anyone know anything about what a recommended amount might be for juicing? Any input would be appreciated.

I'm glad to hear that your wife is doing well with treatment.
Although there is no solid evidence that turmeric has anti-cancer effects in humans, my wife did take a turmeric supplement during her illness. It seems that it is the root and stem of the plant which is thought to be effective, so only if you have access to those parts of the plant. Livestrong has a page discussing dosage amounts here.

Thanks for the reply and the link to the Livestrong page. I don't know how I missed finding that page from my Googling, but I'm sobered by the fact that they say that adults should take no more than 3g of fresh root per day. I'm pretty sure that the juice I've been giving her has been more than that. Of course, it's possible that the juice isn't the only active component, so perhaps the fact that the pieces I was juicing were 5-10g doesn't mean that she had been getting more than 3g worth of "product".
Regardless, from this info, we've decided to forego the fresh root and take standardized supplements, which I purchased today.
