PDL1 and Metastatic bladder cancer - 1253382

My partner is being considered for a place on the MPDL3280A (anti PDL1) trial (Genentech) Although we know that the drug has worked well on lung and kidney cancer and melanoma we can find no evidence that it has had an effect on bladder cancer in trials so far. Is there any information on its use in bladder cancer that you know of? Do you have an opinion of how bladder cancer might react to the? We have noted that PDL trials failed to have an effect on pancreatic and kidney cancer. Any information or research sites would be nost welcome. Thank you for your help. Best wishes

Hi Pat, I'm sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you. I did a little look around see what I could find, there doesn't seem to be much info out there when it comes to bladder cancer and pd 1 except for a couple of trials that are testing a range of cancers with neoplasm and solid tumors (which I believe are the same thing)

Even with lung cancer where there have been promising results the research isn't complete enough in Feb of 2013 to say if it does or doesn't show efficacy.
Since our doctors don't have a specialty in bladder cancer I don't imagine they would be able say anything other than we're all hopeful. But I'm not a doctor and I don't know what we may find out when Dr. West responds to your question.

I don't think that it's possible to say anything other than we don't know until we do the trials (and I think anyone who offers an opinion is just making up an answer that isn't worth listening to). I wouldn't want to speculate on how it might or might not work, but there aren't a lot of solid treatment options for advanced bladder cancer, and there are also not that many clinical trials for it, so I would say that it's an unknown that wouldn't necessarily be worth bypassing an established treatment for, but if there are no other established treatments to pursue, an unknown might be quite appealing.
