Hi, my husband was recently found to have a very small PE on routine CT. He was started on Lovenox and I was wondering what the thoughts were for the new oral drugs such as xarelto? Are there contraindications with underlying malignancy or ceritinib use?

Hi jmpchic,
Hi jmpchic,
I haven't seen anything on our site or elsewhere regarding a problem with Xarelto and ceritinib (Zykadia). The prescribing information for Zykadia does not indicate a problem.
Dr. West has said this about the choice of blood thinners in cancer patients:
"There are many very similar agents that can work effectively as blood thinners. In addition to Lovenox (enoxaparin), there are several other very similar “low molecular weight heparin” injected drugs, as well as some oral agents like Xarelto (rivaroxaban). These are all more effective but also way, way more expensive than Coumadin (warfarin), which has an efficacy that varies greatly with diet and requires frequent monitoring with blood tests — levels of blood thinning can drift too low or too high over days to weeks." - http://cancergrace.org/topic/blood-thinner-alternative-to-lovinox#post-…
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. I know
Thanks for the info. I know it will be a long shot with insurance but worth a shot! ...or should I say no shot (pun intended)! Just trying to find ways to make this as comfortable for him as I can. Feels so helpless from this end.

I just wanted to say I
I just wanted to say I understand your feelings of helplessness. I felt in a panic for quite a while trying to make D as comfortable as possible when he was so sick. I didn't take very good care of myself and am working hard to address that now. I hope you have someone who can focus her attentions on you as well.
Take care,
Janine
