Stage 4 lung cancer and immune system - 1289877

I was diagnosed a little over a year ago with a singular primary tumor and bone mets and have done radiation and targeted treatment. I am curious about the relationship between cancer in general and one's immune system, in addition to the effects of treatment. I know chemotherapy can weaken one's immune system (and I've never done chemotherapy), but since about 12 months prior to my diagnosis until now, it seems I am sicker than I have ever been--colds, strep throat, you name it. And when I get sick, it takes me forever to rebound. I have been under the weather since before Christmas and the doctor has said he assumes I had a virus but would have hoped I'd be feeling better by now. This seems pretty common for me, but wasn't the case up until the year preceeding my diagnosis. Is it coincidence or is there a connection? Thanks.

Your immune system is compromised or else the cancer would not have been able to take hold. Treatment of any kind will also compromise your immune system. Do you eat healthy? Are you exercising at all? What targeted treatment are you on? You need to rebuild your immune system to help you continue to fight the cancer. Hope this helps some and I'm sure the moderators will have more info for you. Wishing you the best.
Take care, Judy

Hi kelybe,

There are many factors which can suppress the immune system, and though cancer is one of those, it would be difficult to pinpoint the cause of your illnesses. As Judy pointed out, treatments other than chemotherapy can affect the immune system, as can some of the supporting medications used to treat side effects of treatment. In your case, radiation can certainly lower immune system response.

You may wish to discuss with your doctor options for helping to strengthen your immune system which are compatible with your current treatment and other medications. And as Judy suggested, a healthy, balanced diet always helps.
