Change = positive thing? - 1268954

My mom was diagnosed with stage 4 NSCLC in January. This was terribly sad news, as we thought that she was in partial remission and had been originally diagnosed as stage 3a. A recent pet scan confirmed that the cancer is now in her adrenal gland and hip bone. She is on Avanstin, taxol and another chemo and is doing well managing side effects. A recent ct scan showed that the mass in her adrenal gland was shrinking. When my parents said that was good news, her dr replied, "what's the difference?" I was shocked at hearing this.

Continuous pain at tumor site. Chemo related? - 1268937

Forums

My father started chemo (Carbo/Vinorelbine) two months ago. He has a paravertebral muscle met which caused very little pain at the momen. He has had three cycles. Each cycle consists of 3 weeks: Carbo+Vin, Vin, nothing.
He has experienced very acute pain at tumor site during all infusions, for 3-4 hours approximately.
But apart from this, since the first infusion his pain has become worse. He needs pain meds. Could this continuous (not acute) pain be caused by chemo? We are worried of disease progression.

Thank you very much,
Jane

New pain chemo related? - 1268935

I am halfway through four cycles of chemo - Cisplatin and Gemcitabine. Have had the usual - hair extremely thinning, nausea especially with the Cisplatin, low white blood cell and platelet counts that cancel treatment, and a mouth sore. The newest ailment, which started four days ago, is a burning sensation in left shoulder blade area. It's not constant, very sporadic. Not always brought on by movement. I'm wondering if this could be a side effect or if I just pulled something or pinched a nerve.

Xalkori and effusions - 1268930

Forums

Has anyone experienced worsening pericardial and pleural effusions while on Xalkori? Been on it 6 months and have noticed deeper breathing, chest and back pressure, bad headache and gassiness that came on this week. Thought it was anxiety for pet scan I had done earlier in the week but it has definitely continued even after getting a much blessed stable report. I work in ultrasound and snuck a quick peek and saw more pericardial effusion than normal and what appeared to be s pleural effusion at quick glance.

Lung Cancer, Pleural catheter not draining - 1268927

Forums

Hello,

I got some unusual responses from my dad's clinical team and I am not sure what to do.
He had a pleural catheter inserted in early January 2015, after what had been a stable effusion, grew very large and caused a partial collapse of his lung. He went from draining 500-700 ml daily to 150-200 ml currently. His Lung is re-expanding and he has recently began feeling better. He has stage 4 adencarcinoma and is currently on Tarceva. However his Onc has recently been seeing very slight signs that tumor resistance is happening.

Poorly differentialed adenocarcinoma - is opdivo an option - 1268916

Forums

My husband experienced progression on Tarceva after less than seven months. Stayed on Tarceva another five months and then stared chemo. Carbo, Avastin Alitma. After two treatments PET showed marked progression. We stopped chemo. Based on feedback from my prior post, my husband started back on Tarceva (as of today). I am wondering if because his biopsy indicates he has a "poorly differentialted carcinoma with adenosquamous carcinoma" if he might be a cadidate for the recently approved Obdivo?

Can a PET scan miss leptomeningeal carcinomatosis? - 1268899

Forums

My uncle was diagnosed in February 2015 with leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (with adenocarcinoma of the lung as the primary). He had no prior history of cancer, so this was quite a shock as you can imagine. He had presented with lower back pain and he couldn't empty his bladder. After a cortisone injection and a massive blast of steroids, he then had severe weakness in his legs. He has no other neurological symptoms.
